Top 20 Contemporary Middle Eastern Artists in 2012-2014
Art in the Middle East (ME) has seen an unprecedented growth over the last 10 years. Today, Dubai is the15th market in the world for the sale of contemporary art ($5.8 million in annual sales) while Doha is in 12th position ($8.5 million in annual sales). The number of galleries in the region has also sky rocketed and the museums now have a broader collection of art work by ME artists. Additionally, a growing number of for and non-profit organizations are playing an active role in the promotion of the ME art.
The current document is the first in a series of reports which draws upon the analytical review of the auction sales data for contemporary Middle Eastern artists. We classify artists as “contemporary” according to their year of birth – here, artists born in 1945 or after. The Top 20 artists selected for our ranking are selected based on their total auction turnover data between July 2012 and end of July 2014. We have then used other measures such as total number of lots sold, Top Hammer Price and measures representing price volatility to provide additional insights on artists’ auction dynamics.
Deriving from more than two decades of management consulting, including our tenure with Accenture and McKinsey and Co., our intention is to leverage the existing body of knowledge in this space and make our share of contribution to the thriving Middle Eastern art community.
